Where Are They?

Kipawa has excellent lake trout fishing with an average weight of 4 to 6 pounds. They will be in shallow water in May (shallow for lake trout is about 10 to 40 feet), then moving deeper through June and into the summer.  During the summer, you will probably catch them in 40 to 100 feet of water, so be prepared to fish deep.

Trolling is the most popular method of fishing for lake trout, but jigging, drifting, and still fishing are also very productive.  Many first-time visitors to Taggart Bay Lodge may shy away from lake trout fishing because it is different from the fishing they may be accustomed to, but you should know that lake trout are the biggest fish in the lake, and the thrill of catching your first laker can be addicting!

  What Should I Bring?

• Large, heavy silver/chrome jigging spoons such as Krocodiles (1-1/2 oz. plus).
• Silver/blue deep diving plugs.
• You can troll with lighter lures if you add trolling weights to a 3-way swivel several feet in front of the lure (use 2 oz. to 5 oz. weights like banana sinkers or keel sinkers).

  What About Rods and Reels?

• We provide free use of traditional steel line trolling equipment if you don't have such tackle, but feel free to bring your own heavier tackle if you'd like.
• A medium-heavy baitcasting rod will do fine.
• A larger capacity reel spooled with steel wire or a non-stretch line is recommended.  The minimum size would be similar to an Ambassadeur 6500 series reel, and reels slightly bigger will work even better.  If you have line counter reels, bring them.
• If all you have is a medium or medium-heavy spinning rod, bring that and some 2 to 5 oz. weights so you don't have to troll with so much line out - it'll work fine!
